This part of ISO 7176 specifies the requirements for the power and control systems of electrically powered wheelchairs, including battery chargers, and associated test methods. It sets minimum requirements for the protection of the wheelchair user during normal use and some conditions of abuse and failure. It also specifies methods of measurement of the forces necessary to operate the controls and sets limits on the forces needed for some operations.This part of ISO 7176 is applicable to electrically powered vehicles intended to provide indoor and outdoor mobility for disabled persons whose mass at speeds up to 15 km/h does not exceed 100 kg.It is not applicable to electrically powered vehicles which incorporate devices that need to be connected to a domestic or industrial power supply greater than 100 volts (e.g. those with built-in battery chargers).It does not include requirements on electromagnetic susceptibility or emissions.

A wheelchair is a mobility device that enables a sick or a disabled person to move. It’s basically a chair mounted on wheels, which can be propelled either manually or electrically. Wheelchairs propelled electronically are known as electric wheelchairs.

Electric wheelchairs are powered by motors. They can be used indoors and outdoors and cost at least $1,500. Depending on the kind and extent of use, there are several kinds of wheelchairs available on the market. Some features to consider when buying a wheelchair are the weight and size of the person using it, convenience of both indoor and outdoor use, the chair’s weight capacity, power source, warranty and cost.

Electric wheelchairs are generally used by people who have limited or no mobility due to many different ailments. Some people can be required to use a wheelchair because of old age, paralysis, weight, degenerating muscle diseases, broken or weak bones or other illnesses. Electric wheelchairs are easy to use because they are powered by batteries and can be controlled by a joystick. They are also highly maneuverable as they can turn 360 degrees in one spot. They are also very quiet but they require more maintenance than manual wheelchairs.

Electric wheelchairs are now being designed according to the users’ requirements. Advanced technologies like spring suspension, pneumatic wheels and hydraulic systems are being applied to increase the wheelchair’s strength and durability. There are basically three types of electric wheelchairs, including rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and mid-wheel drive.

Rear-wheel drive wheelchairs are the traditional and most common type. They are faster then front-wheel models but are not as flexible while turning as the front-wheel drive and mid-wheel drive wheelchairs.

Front-wheel drive wheelchairs are becoming more popular because they are more flexible and maneuverable. They are slightly slower than the rear-wheel drive wheelchairs because of this.

Mid-wheel drive wheelchairs are the tightest-turning wheelchairs. However, they tend to be slightly unsteady while stopping and starting.

Other types of electric wheelchairs are based on weight, ranging from ultra lightweight to heavy-duty wheelchairs; transport wheelchairs; tilt-in-space wheelchairs; wheelchairs with an elevating seat; rough terrain wheelchairs; pediatric wheelchairs and specialty wheelchairs, among others.

Various options are available for almost every part of an electric wheelchair. The wheelchair frame can be foldable or rigid while the wheels can be front-wheel or free wheel. Various foot and armrests are also available including, detachable, swing-away or elevating. The footplates and armrests can be customized to adjust for both angle and height.

When purchasing a wheelchair the above considerations are only the start of choosing the right design. Other important considerations are the dimensions of the chair’s backrest and whether it will be foldable and/or able to recline; the dimensions and upholstery of the chair’s seat; automatic or hand brakes; the type of controls; kerb climbers and whether or not the wheelchair will be outfitted with lights. Other options that can be attached to electric wheelchairs include a tray, crutch holders, seat belts, bags, drink holders and anti-tip bars.

The nature of the disability will go some way into determining what sort of mobility scooter will be the right one. If the disabled scooter is to completely replace a car, then a small boot scooter is unlikely to fit the bill. By the same token, if you require an electric scooter that dismantles to fit into the car boot then a large road legal electric scooter will not be suitable.
Mobility scooters can be simply divided into three categories: small / boot scooters, medium scooters and large scooters. Small or boot mobility scooters as their name suggests are small scooters that easily dismantle to fit into a car boot. These scooters can have a range of up to 15-20 miles between charges. They tend to be seen in shopping centres and on the pavements. The riders of these scooters usually have some mobility but tend to tire easily or maybe can’t walk very far.
Medium sized mobility scooters are much more substantial than small/boot mobility scooters. Medium sized mobility scooters often offer more car-like features such as a padded, height and reach adjustable seat, lights and indicators, and a longer range between charges. They tend to have bigger wheels and can have a maximum speed of up to 6mph.
Large sized mobility scooters are much more substantial, and often twice the size of a boot scooter. These disabled scooters have a top speed of up to 8mph, and depending on the model range of up to 35 miles and are legal to be used on the road or off-road. As they are road legal, they have a full lighting kit and indicators. They offer large wheels, pneumatic tyres and often have suspension to provide a comfortable ride. For a lot of people, these large mobility scooters will replace their car and will be their main method of transport.
How often you use the electric scooter, where you go on it, where it will be stored, how it needs to be charged (whether the battery pack can be charged separately from the electric scooter or not) will help to determine what sort of mobility scooter will be right for you. If your scooter is to replace your car and will be used everyday, you will need a different type of scooter to someone who uses their scooter on days out and leaves it in the car or the house the rest of the time.

People with limited or no mobility need special care and attention and products designed especially for them which can make their lives easier and more comfortable. While performing routine activities, people with this sort of special needs encounter the same problems as the rest of us and they have to deal with them even if they are not as fortunate as we are. They could be facing a disability or a physical handicap or they could simply be older, but they all need to rely on mobility aids and sometimes also on handicap bathroom aids to get through the day.

We don’t pay much conscious thought to the fact that each morning we are able to get out of the bed and start walking around doing our daily practice, but for some of us moving can be a real challenge. Even if the physical condition of the disabled person could be only a temporary and mild injury, or a permanent and severe one, the situation of not being able to cope with simple intimate things is just as stressful. In any of these situations, mobility aids which are special needs products represent a real solution to significantly improve the life quality of a person with mobility issues.

Physical problems are usually caused by the fact that the muscles don’t work effectively or because of nerve damage. The brain’s impulses don’t reach the muscle intended to be moved. Accidents or injuries, diseases and aging can lead to limited mobility and even to no mobility at all, in some unfortunate cases. Mobility aids represent those devices that can offer support to the muscles which don’t efficiently work any more. Depending on a person’s disability, the type of mobility aids that can be used may vary.

Some of the most important mobility aids in severe cases of disability are the transfer belts and boards that can assist transferring a disabled person from a chair, wheelchair or scooter to a bed, car or into the bath.

Another significant problem for the physically challenged people is another daily routine that becomes an exercise in frustration, the daily bath. In fact, people with mobility issues often see the bathroom as a room filled with traps. Most of us take for granted the simple pleasure of relaxing in a bath, yet for people with poor mobility this simple pleasure becomes a time-consuming, frustrating and physically taxing experience.
