For those people who spend a lot of time in bed, in a powerchair or wheelchair, or a riser recliner chair, the risk of pressure sores can be high. With the right pressure relieving mobility products and remembering to change positions regularly, the risk of pressure sores can be greatly reduced.

Bed sores are areas of skin that are damaged, and usually affect the bony areas of the body, such as heels, hips, elbows and head. Pressure sores are serious, and can damage the fatty tissue underneath the skin. Untreated, they can lead to infection and blood poisoning, and in severe cases, they can even be life threatening.

Pressure sores and ulcers, or decubitus, are caused a person staying in the same position without moving; shearing, which is when the skin drags when slipping or sliding in bed and friction from poor lifting, moving and handling techniques. Those susceptible to bed sores include those with reduced mobility, those suffering from an acute illness, the immobile, the elderly, the very young, and the malnourished. The patient can also be affected by moisture and any medication that they may be taking. For healthcare professionals as well as the individual, pressure relief is a very important consideration in the rehabilitation process.

There are several different types of mobility aids which can help reduce the risk of pressure sores. Here is a list of six types of pressure relieving mobility products suitable for home use or use in a care giving environment.

1. Constant Low Pressure devices such as mattresses and overlays spread the body weight over a larger area. A pressure relieving mattress has a supportive, or “memory foam” base, which means that no additional mattress topper is needed. Some types of pressure relieving mattress are flexible enough to be suitable for electric adjustable mobility beds. Mattress toppers, as the name suggests, sit on top of a traditional mattress, and mould to the shape of the body, and so provide additional comfort. Pressure relieving bed pads have sewn in sections to prevent the material moving, and so reduce friction. These bed pads are normally for temporary rather than long term usage. Foam and fibre mattress overlays are used with a mattress, and allow the air to circulate. This reduces the build up of moisture which can lead to pressure sores. The various types of mattresses, toppers and overlays are available for different situations. For example, some are more suited for medical use than others.

2. Alternating Pressure devices mechanically vary the pressure beneath the patient, and may not be suitable for those with fractures. These types of mobility devices are often programmable so that the patient gets the correct amount of support. These pressure relieving systems are usually virtually noise and vibration free. Some models work on the patient’s BMI (Body Mass Index), and depending on the model, the control unit can be used with several mattresses to save on costs and storage.

3. Low Air Loss pressure relieving devices work by supporting the patient on air filled sacks inflated at a constant pressure, through which air can pass. Air fluidised devices are designed for high-risk individuals who are not able to tolerate pressure. The airflow is warmed through sand-like grains or beads which are in an air-permeable fabric to create a dry flotation system.

4. Pressure relieving mobility devices are available for bony areas of the body such as the heels, hips, elbows and the head which are also at risk of pressure sores as the skin is thinner and so is damaged more easily. These types of mobility aids are commonly used in hospitals and nursing homes as well as domestically. Depending on the type of protector, medication can be applied to the protector.

5. For people who sit in the same position all day, using a proper pressure relieving cushion can drastically reduce the risk of pressure sores. If you use a riser recliner chair, you can adjust the position of the chair to change the position and spread the pressure. If a traditional type of chair is used, a dedicated chair cushion can help. Common types of cushion include ring cushions which are round and inflatable, and waffle cushions which can be inflatable and have ventilation holes which allow good air circulation.

6. Wheelchair and powerchair cushions are very important to reduce the risk of pressure sores and should not be overlooked when purchasing a wheelchair or powerchair. Purchasing the right size of cushion for the chair is vital in order that the cushion can be effective.

Using the correct pressure relieving mobility products is important and has measurable health benefits; however the most important point to remember is that changing positions regularly is the best way of preventing and treating pressure sores.

NMEDA will hold the last three mobility conversion service schools of 2005. The schools are certified classes on equipment installation by the manufacurers. The importance of these schools include certification on conversion safety, manufacturer instruction and a heightened awareness of safety issues. Making the Best of Your Orlando Vacation: A Quick Guide for Mobility-Challenged Visitors – by Jo Roberts

Planning for an Orlando vacation can seem daunting if you or one of your traveling companions have difficulty walking or a disability that limits your mobility. But what you need to know is Orlando — and its many visitor attractions — is amongst the country’s most accommodating, and most popular, destinations for people with mobility-limitations. Don’t miss the excitement of visiting Orlando’s world-famous theme parks and side trips Central Florida’s many museums, cultural attractions, sporting venues and theaters: all these places were designed with you in mind. Make the most of your Orlando vacation, no matter what your age or walking ability, with these “know before you go” tips, tricks and ideas.

Getting Around
A little pre-planning goes a long way when it comes to getting from place to place throughout Central Florida and even within the theme parks.

Mobility Scooters (ECVs): While you may consider bringing your own Electronic Convenience Vehicle (ECV) with you for use throughout your trip, doing so can prove expensive and, if you fly, potentially damaging to your expensive equipment (your batteries may not even be allowed on board). Instead, rent one once you get to Orlando. Each of the major resorts — Disney, Universal and SeaWorld — provide day rentals for use within specific, individual parks on a first come first serve basis and on busy day can run out as early as 10:30 am. However, local companies rent scooters for use at all area attractions, providing an easier and more economical option. Parking: All Disney parks features special handicap-only parking sections adjoining park entrances or access points. Simply ride your mobility scooter to the monorail platform or directly to the ticket window and designated turnstile. When visiting Universal driving a specialty lift or modified vehicle, be sure to tell your parking attendant that you require over-height parking; they’ll direct you to special parking areas. It will take you longer to get into the park, but you won’t damage your vehicle. Standard rental cars and SUVs fit within all ramp levels, so follow the signs for handicap spaces if applicable; from there, you can ride your mobility scooter to your preferred park in no time. And don’t forget your disabled parking permit when you leave home: communities and resorts do not offer temporary passes and will require you to park in regular spots without it.

Buses: All LYNX (www.golynx.com) public transit buses accommodate riders using compact scooters, including those that service the Disney, Universal and I-Drive areas. If you choose to rent one of the newer, more maneuverable Orlando mobility scooter models available you can even ride directly onto all Disney transit vehicles, including resort buses and the monorail. If you’re planning to take a privately operated bus or shuttle service, check with the operator prior to your trip to review any requirements or restrictions that apply to scooters.

Sleeping Over
Metro Orlando boasts more than 110,000 hotel rooms, from budget-friendly economy motels to five-star luxury spa retreats. Pick the one right for you.

Hotels, Timeshares and Condos: All Orlando hotels must provide accommodations for mobility-impaired guests, so when making your reservation don’t hesitate to request an ADA-accessible room with rails and special bathroom facilities, if needed. Otherwise, eliminate the need for, and expense of, special lodging by renting one of the more maneuverable scooter models and drive it directly into your room or suite each night. Choose a mobility scooter model that folds-up or disassembles (such as those designed to fit within a car trunk) if you want to maximize space in a small room.

Rental Homes: The number of rental home properties throughout Central Florida has exploded in recent years and an increasing number provide facilities specially designed for guests with mobility issues, including entry ramps for mobility scooters and plenty of space to “scoot” inside. These prove a great option for families traveling together.

Amenities: Disney’s Polynesian Resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa now feature “zero-entry” pools with gradual ramps, as well waterproof wheelchairs that you can transfer into from a scooter, if needed.

Navigating the Parks
No trip to Orlando is complete without a visit to one of its world-famous theme parks. These parks encompass enormous areas, so navigating each via mobility scooter may provide the most enjoyable and least stressful experience for all guests in your group.

Walt Disney World Resort: Guest Services provides copies of the “Guide for Guests with Disabilities” upon request, which highlights policies, ride requirements and special accommodations within each park. Some rides allow guests to remain on mobility scooters throughout, while others require guests to transfer into a ride vehicle alone or with a companion’s assistance (Disney policy prevents Cast Members from providing physical assistance). Plus, some facilities provide special, more easily navigable queues for guests on mobility scooters to minimize wait time. Keep on the lookout for special parade viewing areas that even accommodate a small number of friends and family members. And, when visiting Animal Kingdom, be aware that its varied, hilly terrain drains ECV batteries much quicker than other Disney parks, so be cautious and turn off your mobility scooter when you don’t need it.

Universal Orlando Resort: Most attractions at Universal Studios and its sister park, Islands of Adventure, features navigable queues (with the exception of Back to the Future and Pteranodon Flyers rides), though some require scooter riders unable to stand in line for the duration of the wait time to transfer to a manual wheelchair provided on-site; just park your mobility scooter in the indicated area outside and ask an attendant for assistance. On some rides mobility-impaired guests must either climb aboard the vehicle unassisted or with a travel companion’s help in order to participate. Speak with Guest Services upon arrival or call in advance to have a copy of the “Rider’s Guide for Safety and Guests with Disabilities” mailed to you for in-depth details and requirements.

SeaWorld Orlando: The park provides accessibility to exhibits and seating for guests with mobility issues as well as one companion within each stadium and theater. Check with a SeaWorld team member before any performance to ensure you don’t park your scooter in a “soak zone” or other area where it will get wet; you may feel refreshed after a splash of salt water, but your transporter will not! Be equally cautious when interacting with the animals at Dolphin Cove. Park ECVs a few feet away and walk to the exhibit (with the help of a companion, if needed) to prevent possible damage. How To Charge and Maintain Your Mobility Scooter – by www.scootamart.com Staff

First of all, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations in the manual that came with the mobility scooter as each scooter will have different instructions. Depending on the instructions, you may need to recharge your scooter after each time you use it. Or, you may only need to recharge it when it when the battery gauge tells you that battery charge is low.
If you have a small / boot electric scooter you may be able to take the battery pack off the scooter and charge the batteries independently of the scooter. This means that you can leave the scooter in the car, and charge the batteries indoors, such as at home, in a hotel room or caravan. Other mobility scooters need to have the batteries left on them to charge them. The charging point is on the scooter itself, rather than the battery pack. This means that the disabled scooter battery has to be charged near a mains outlet, and so the mobility scooter is likely to be kept in a garage or shed if it’s too large to be kept inside the house. As a rough guide, depending on use, terrain, and user weight, the batteries can last 1-2 years. Obviously if the mobility scooter is used for a travelling a few miles a week on flat terrain, the batteries will last longer than if the scooter is used for travelling 20 miles a day up and down hills and off road.
The mobility scooter manual may say that bigger batteries can be fitted to your disability scooter. This will provide you with a greater range, meaning that you can go further before needing to charge your batteries. The batteries are available from mobility dealers and the price will depend on the battery capacity. The batteries are often the heaviest item on a mobility scooter. Bigger batteries will mean heavier batteries, which is one thing to consider if you often dismantle the scooter to transport it in the car.
Like a car, your mobility scooter will need a service from time to time. The mobility scooter manual will advise you how often your scooter needs servicing. As a rough guide it will need servicing every 12 months or so, depending on use. An authorised mobility dealer will be able to carry out the scooter service, and ensure that the scooter is functioning to its full capability. Depending on the dealer, and the model and age of the scooter, the scooter service may take two hours. The service may also include a test ride by the mechanic to fully check the mobility scooter and make sure that it is running smoothly and as it should do. The mobility scooter may need to be taken to a mobility dealer to be serviced, or the dealer may carry out the service in the user’s home. This means that the user won’t be without their scooter, and can ask the mechanic any questions regarding their scooter. The manual will also describe and weekly or monthly maintenance checks that are required. This can include pumping up the tyres, lubricating the brake, checking the seat mechanism and so on.
The mobility scooter bodywork is usually made out of plastic, and so may be subjected to some wear and tear during the life of the scooter. Replacement shrouds (bodywork) for the front and rear might be available depending on the model of scooter. These are usually easy to fit, and can be fitted by the user or a local mobility dealer.
