Sports: Don’t just assume that because someone is in a wheelchair they can’t play sports. In fact, many people in wheelchairs still use sports as an outlet. For example, many wheelchair users love to play basketball, pool, bowling, swim & lift weights.

Videogames: Video games are a great outlet for those in a wheelchair. Especially for those who are unable or unwilling to play sports, video games can give wheelchair users a chance to scratch their competitive itch. Specifically, the Nintendo Wii is excellent!

Camping: Everybody loves the outdoors, and wheelchair users are no exception. Most campsites have wheelchair accessible spots just make sure you call ahead. Possible fun activities include fishing, hiking (if there are accessible trails) and swimming.

Art: Wheelchair users have a unique vantage point of the world, and it can often lead to great photography. Likewise, many people in wheelchairs are forced to adapt their other senses, and many develop unique artistic talents in the areas of painting, drawing and music.

Traveling: If you took a poll of wheelchair users, a majority would likely mention traveling as their favorite activity. Depending on where you are traveling, make sure you plan ahead and do research on possible wheelchair traveling locations.

If you suffer from mobility problems such as arthritis and back pain, and spend a lot of time in an armchair, you may find it difficult to get in and out of your chair. A rise and recline chair can assist you.

Electric lift chairs rise up so that the user just needs stay almost stood up, and then perch on the edge of the chair and then use the handset to lower the chair into the right seating position. Depending on the model of chair, the footrest will come up automatically so that the body and legs are correctly supported. When you want to get out of the chair, simply use the handset to raise the chair to the standing position again, and get off. Some models of electric lift chair have a back that reclines far enough so that you can safely snooze on it. Riser recliner chairs are also of proven benefit to those with medical conditions such as arthritis and circulation problems. There are manual reclining chair models which as the name suggests are operated by hand rather than electricity. The manual chair has a lever on the side which operates the chair. These might not be suitable for some people, depending on their needs.

The nature of the disability is likely to play a part in deciding which lift chair to choose. A very supportive back rest may be a requirement. The user will need to be able to use and understand the controls. Depending on the model of riser recliner chair, there may be only two buttons on the handset; one to raise the chair, and the other to lower it. If the chair has two individual motors and a heat and massage function, there may be several buttons for the user to learn.

There are different styles and makes and models of mobility chair, ranging from manually operated reclining chairs through to very luxurious chairs that offer many features such as leather upholstery, additional pockets and heat and massage units. Mobility chairs are available in various colours of upholstery, and so you should be able to find a colour that fits in with your existing décor. Leather or leather-look upholstery can be kept clean easier than other upholstery, and might be more appropriate. Some models of rise and recline chairs come with matching settees or other furniture so that your front room furniture matches.

As people are different sizes, rise recliner chairs come in different sizes too. The chair that offers the most comfort and convenience to a petite person probably won’t provide the same level of comfort to somebody who is very tall, and vice versa. It is important to ensure that you get the right size of chair for you, as the wrong chair can do you more harm than good.

The rise and recline chair will usually have one or two motors. If the footrest raises or lowers with the backrest, then there is one motor. If the backrest and footrest operate independently, there are two motors. Models with two motors are usually more expensive, but offer more positions so that you can find your ideal seating position. Depending on the user’s needs, the legs or back may need to be at a certain position, which a single motor chair might not provide.

Modern lift chairs are very reliable and most models even come with a battery back up feature so that user is not stuck in the event of a power cut. The battery will power the chair for two or three lifts only, but will ensure that the user is not left sitting in the incorrect position, and is not stranded. Safety is also very important, so particular attention needs to be paid so that children and others do not play with the rise and recline chair. There is usually a substantial guarantee with mobility chairs, and some manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty.

The location of the riser recliner chair is important. The chair will need to be positioned near a power socket, and the back needs to well away from the wall so that when the backrest is fully reclined it doesn’t touch the wall. If the chair is too near the wall and the back is reclined, the back might not stop when it hits the wall, and so the motor will burn out, which obviously won’t be covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. If the chair is to face a television or other focal point, it is advisable to do this whilst the chair is being set up. Once the chair is set up it is quite difficult to move, especially to a different room, as the back needs to be taken off which can be quite complicated.

As a child I often accompanied my mum to her stalls with her Shopmobility and spent hours watching her work. When I was older, I sometimes set up displays, waited on customers, and anything else she asked me to. This experience instilled in me the desire to own and manage my own business someday, yet I understand that the business world today is more complex I still understand the basic elements.

In addition to my helping out at my mums work, I have had numerous other work experiences from other jobs.
Although my CV explains some of the workplaces I have been on a payroll for I have gained valuable expertise with other voluntary organisations; at 6th form I was part of the BMX X Races club where I headed the organisation team as I have 13 years of bike history form mountain biking and BMXing where over the years have gained a refined knowledge of different makes of bikes, how bikes work, how they break and how to fix them which I think would help a lot with this job.

I am very interested in the role of (insert job title). I feel my unique past experiences have prepared me to work in such a role. While my CV gives more details on my past employment, it does not reflect the additional outside experiences that I believe make me an excellent candidate. I have 13 years of personal biking experience gained from mountain biking and BMX races, where I headed organisational team of the BMX X Races club. I believe my personal knowledge of the various bike manufactureres, working parts, and repair would help me in this role.

In addition, as a child, I would accompany my mother to her business. This gave me the opportunity to greet and assist customers, set up displays, and instill a desire in me to one day one and manage my own business. The organization promotes and supports individual members engaged in the modification of quality transportation for people with disabilities. Membership has grown to over 650 members with the bulk of the membership located in the United States and Canada.

NMEDA members adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and follow the NMEDA Guidelines. NMEDA members update the Guidelines, a living document providing detailed recommended practices on equipment installation and modifications, yearly. Every NMEDA member agrees to follow these Guidelines when they join the association.

The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is a nationally recognized accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry. The program promotes quality, safety, and reliability within the industry. Some states now require a dealerÂÂ’s participation in the QAP to perform work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs. The QAP is the only program of this nature developed for the mobility equipment industry. A QAP designation enhances vehicle modification and mobility equipment installation in a manner consistent with the highest guidelines available in the industry. The states that have adapted the program include South Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.

Kentucky is pending. Louisiana and North Carolina require QAP or an equivalent.

Whether you plan on being in a wheelchair for just a short time or for the duration of your life, it is very important to pick the right one for you.

With so many wheelchairs on the market today, it can be a tough task to undertake; but you can easily purchase the right wheelchair for you by becoming knowledgeable about your choices. They are most suitable for short-term use, for those who donÂÂ’t use a wheelchair too often or for those who have upper body strength. Those who have limited movement or a weak upper body may need someone to push them, or may want to consider the electric wheelchair.

Electric wheelchairs are wheelchairs powered by a motor. They were created especially for those individuals with limited or no body mobility, or for those who use wheelchairs as their primary source of getting around. They are pricier than manual wheelchairs, but the cost is definitely a wash when considering if your wheelchair needs are substantial.

Electric wheelchairs come in a few styles – the traditional style electric wheelchair resembles a manual wheelchair with the exception of the motor, battery and controls; and the platform electric wheelchair look more like a seat placed on top of the motor encasement.

The motor is often placed below the electric wheelchair in order to minimize any noise. The electric wheelchair controls are usually to the right or left of the arm rests, and can even be repositioned based on your wheelchair needs. People who enjoy outdoor activities regularly may need to be careful in an electric wheelchair – most models are designed for indoor use and can crack or become faulty over time. But, there are some indoor/outdoor models marketed today, and may be the outdoor enthusiastÂÂ’s best electric wheelchair bet.

Sports wheelchairs differ from the traditional manual wheelchair – they are very lightweight and designed to withstand the normal wear and tear that goes along with a number of sporting activities. Sports wheelchairs use lightweight metals that can withstand a beating like titanium, chrome, aluminum and steel tubing.

The base of a sports wheelchair is wider than other traditional wheelchairs in order to support different sporting activities, and the center of gravity can be adjusted for the individual using the sports wheelchair. The sports wheelchair is generally affordable, but the more custom features it contains, the more expensive it will be.

Electric wheelchairs are either rear or front wheel driven. Some of them are center driven or four wheel driven. These powerchairs come in many varieties like small portable models, foldable models, and models that can be dis-assembled. Large, full-featured electric wheelchairs that are called rehab chairs are also available. Powerchairs are designed for persons who have arm and leg disablement. Such people would find the operations of hand propelled wheelchairs quite difficult.

Electric wheelchairs are fitted with electric motors that are powered by 4 to 5 ampere rechargeable batteries. These motors are outboard boat engine types. The batteries come in dry or wet types. Dry type batteries are the most preferred ones due to ease of operation and maintenance. Electric wheelchairs are also fitted with battery chargers so that plugging into standard wall outlets is easy.

Operating either a joystick or a controller usually controls electric wheelchairs. Hand controllers, chin controllers, puff/sack controllers are specifically designed for persons with varying degrees of operational difficulty. The controller is the most expensive part of powerchairs and is quite delicate. Electric wheelchairs come with several optional functions like tilting, reclining seat and leg elevators, etc. to facilitate healthy and functional operations.

Electric wheelchairs for kids are generally those used by mentally disabled children or children affected by polio. These wheelchairs are custom made to suit the age of the child as well as the usage like indoors or outdoors or both. Polio affected kids and paraplegics were using hand supports till a few decades ago. Such hand supports normally resulted in severe body strain to the kids. The advent of electric wheelchair for kids has greatly relieved such kids of their suffering.

Travel had been on the rise and persons using wheelchairs are no exception. Traveling on vacation, travel for education, employment or participation in sports meets and general commuting for shopping, etc. have become indispensable for persons using electric wheelchairs. Portable and foldable models of wheelchairs require storage space, when not being used. As such, public transports like buses, trains and airplanes specifically provide electric wheelchair carriers. Buses with low boarding platforms that can literally lift wheelchairs into the buses have also been designed to serve such people. Such platforms are electrically or hydraulically operated.

Nowadays, in the United States, sales and service facilities for electric wheelchairs are quite widespread. You do not have to go too far to buy an electric wheelchair of your choice. As these powerchairs are made-to-order types, deliveries take some time but are normally very reliable. Electric wheelchair parts repair has also become quite easy, reliable and economical due to the healthy competition between the various electric wheelchair manufacturers.

Operation of an electric wheelchair by patients or disabled persons carries a certain amount of risk. Accidents could not be avoided at one time or another. Such accidents could be minor or major. Hence, insurance companies provide both accident/life insurance policies, as well as medicare policies to cover such risks. It is always advisable to take suitable insurance policies for physical and financial protection. Electric wheelchairs and medicare go hand-in-hand for persons confined to wheelchairs.

Electric power scooters, or mobility scooters as they are called, are normally fitted with two rear wheels, a seat with a flat area to place the feet and a handlebar in the front to operate one or two steerable front wheels. Swiveling seats are also available. Electric power scooters are invariably electric powered by rechargeable batteries that could be charged from standard electric outlets. Certain models of mobile scooters are gasoline-powered. Such electric power scooters have been most welcome for persons confined to wheelchairs. They find such scooters handy for commuting to schools and colleges as well as to workplaces and shopping. Electric power scooters are normally cheaper than powerchairs. Insurance companies and healthcare agencies like Medicare prefer to insure or extend medicare facilities for people using such scooters.

What Is the Difference Between a Mobility Scooter and a Powerchair?

Mobility scooters and powerchairs are often grouped together to differentiate them from traditional self-propelled, or pushed manual wheelchairs. There are however some fundamental differences between a mobility scooter and a powerchair.

Mobility scooters have three or four wheels and are steered using a bicycle style handlebar (or tiller) which requires two hands, and are designed to travel up to 35 miles. They are often used by people with limited mobility, or those who tire easily when walking. Depending on the model and type of mobility scooter, the scooter may dissemble into easy to manage components so that it can be easily transported in a car, or stored at home.

Powerchairs usually look more like traditional wheelchairs, and some models even look just like a traditional wheelchair with batteries and a motor attached to each wheel. The powerchair is driven using one hand by a joystick controller on the arm of the powerchair. Powerchair users tend to spend more time in their chairs than scooter users spend on their scooters. Because of this, powerchairs are usually more adaptable than disabled scooters and some models can have specialist seats and controllers fitted to suit the individual requirements of the user. For example, the powerchair can be controlled by hand, by a chin controller, or even using a sip and puff pipe operated with the mouth. The footrests can be specific to the user’s needs and can include swing away or articulating footrests. Powerchairs are also more likely to be used inside although some powerchairs are equally capable indoors and outdoors. Mobility scooters are more likely to be used outdoors, although some of the smaller ones can be used indoors.

Electric scooters usually have one motor to drive the rear wheels whilst powerchairs have two motors to individually drive the rear wheels. This gives the powerchair a smaller turning circle which is ideal for indoor use, and provides a lot of traction and control. Some powerchairs even have the option of an electrically operated hydraulic seat so that the user can reach traditionally unreachable places like cupboards and shelves. Disabled scooters tend to be less configurable than powerchairs, and have fewer optional extras.

Disability scooters tend to be less expensive than powerchairs. Powerchairs have two motors, and better, more supportive seating as users often spend a lot of time in the powerchair. Powerchair users may not be able to support themselves, or be able to walk at all, and so their requirements are different from mobility scooter users.

Traditionally, powerchairs were not as easy to dismantle as mobility scooters, but this is changing and most of the powerchair manufacturers offer powerchairs that will fit into a car boot. Designs are constantly changing and improving, and powerchairs are becoming as easy to dismantle and as rugged as mobility scooters. Some powerchairs have six wheels for added stability, and some are front wheel drive for added indoor maneuverability.

My elderly parents have both a power chair and a scooter.
A power chair is for in the house use. Basically an electric wheelchair.
A scooter is for more outside use, and can even be used on the sidewalk for short distances. It is not usually used in the house.
If you do a Google search, you can look up scooters and power chairs and learn more.

“We received a lot of positive feedback for AMKAR E-4. The E-4 can comfortably transport one wheelchair passenger and three ambulatory passengers. However some commercial customers told us that there was a need for an AMKAR that could transport more passengers,” said Tom Bonnell, General Manager, MPD. “Based on Global Electric Motors (GEM) G-6 133″ wheelbase, we designed the AMKAR E-6 specifically to meet that need. Depending on the sizes of the wheelchairs and passengers, E-6 is capable of transporting 6 passengers, two in wheelchairs and four ambulatory. We developed E-6’s modular flip and roll front and second row seats to be removable. This allows for making space adjustments in the vehicle based on the size of wheelchair, scooter or other special needs of passengers being driven. At this time, we are proud to say that MPD is the only manufacturer of low speed, electric vehicles that can comfortably transport passengers in wheelchairs that are also ADA (American Disability Act) compliant.”

The AMKAR E-6 and E-4 wheelchair accessible ramps are designed so that they can be opened or closed with the push of a button. This allows for safe and easy entry or exit of the vehicle for a wheelchair occupant. Inside AMKAR, the occupant can either drive or remain in their wheelchair while being driven. Either way, the wheelchair is easily locked into place with the simple push of a button and the occupant secured with AMKAR’s safety belt system. A driver can use the standard gas and brake foot pedals or a physically challenged driver can operate AMKAR with an optional MPD Push/Pull 3400 Series Hand Control.

Laws regarding low-speed vehicle use vary from state to state. To meet NHTSA’s safety requirements, the AMKAR E-6 and E-4 are equipped with safety glass windshields, headlamps, taillights, turn signals, high mounted stoplights, mirrors, and three-point safety belts. Both AMKARs use GEM’s 72 volt battery-electric powered chassis. Their six 12-volt maintenance-free gel batteries can be charged or topped-off anytime by plugging into a standard 110-volt outlet. Under proper conditions, E-6 and E-4 will get up to 30 miles on fully charged batteries. They are electronically limited to a top speed of 25 mph in order to meet Federal Low-Speed Vehicle requirements. They can be driven on public roads that are posted 35 mph or less in the United States. E-6 comes with an optional “S” package that provides extra cargo-carrying capabilities.

Mr. Bonnell added, “Think of how many people you see at airports, universities, resorts and other venues all around the world using wheelchairs and scooters to get around. Now think of all the golf-cart type vehicles we see at these venues that can only carry folks without wheelchairs or scooters. Replacing every one of these vehicles with an AMKAR will make low speed, electric transportation accessible for all. There are many organizations that offer free power wheelchairs and assistive devices such as hospital beds, lift chairs, walkers and other medical equipment. Here are a few:

MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) accepts wheelchair donations, which they refurbish and offer at no cost to persons in need.

Orphaned Wheelchairs and The Wheelchair Foundation
The Wheelchair Foundation has partnered with Orphaned Wheelchairs to deliver wheelchairs to people in the United States. Orphaned Wheelchairs takes donations of new and used wheelchair equipment, identifies recipients in the USA, and distributes the wheelchair equipment to those in need.  Included are free power wheelchairs

Special Kids Fund
Special Kids Fund is an alliance of schools, hospitals, and social service organizations that provide for the special needs of children with disabilities and at-risk youth. Through the Special Kids Fund Vehicles for the Disabled Program, donated wheelchair vans and vehicles are given to physically disabled persons who are not able to afford them.  This includes traditional and powered wheelchairs.

The Senior Wheels USA Program
This program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to seniors (age 65 and up) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program.

The Wheelchair Project
The site offers an inventory list of all available wheelchairs – both manual and powered.  They do not put a price on the chairs, only ask that you either pick up or arrange for delivery.

If you plan on getting a power wheelchair through Medicare or your own private insurance, it is important to note that Medicare and most private insurers will cover between 50% and 80% of the allowable price for power chairs for those who are eligible. The amount that your insurance company pays will depend in part on the type of mobility chair you require and the state in which you live. Be sure to do your homework, and beware of anyone who knocks on your door or approaches you on the street and offers to take you to a physician to get a free power wheelchair or scooter. Legitimate providers do not do that.  Instead, they prefer to work with your existing physician. Avoid anyone who will not allow you to use your own physician and insists that you go to theirs.

It is possible to find free power wheelchairs if you are realistic about what is available.   Regaining your mobility and independence is definitely worth the research!

What Do Mobility Scooters Consist Of?

Mobility Scooters usually consist of a base unit, the drive chain, the seat, and tiller, as well as the batteries and wheels. The base unit is the chassis that the other components are attached to. This chassis provides the area where the feet go in between the tiller and the batteries or drive chain. The drive chain is the part that powers the scooter. The tiller is the handlebar that steers the mobility scooter.

Front wheel drive mobility scooters have the drive train just over the front wheel. These sorts of scooter have a smaller weight capacity and are much more suited to indoor use than outdoor use compared to a rear wheel driver mobility scooter. They directly drive the front wheel, and so are not as good up hills as rear wheel drive scooters. Front wheel drive scooters also tend to be small/boot scooters rather than larger pavement or road legal scooters. Rear wheel drive mobility scooters use a chain, belt or transaxle mechanism to drive the rear wheels. Rear wheel drive scooters “push” the rider whereas front wheel drive scooters “pull” the rider. This offers more power and efficiency and so provides a better ride, and allows the scooter to go up steeper hills.

Mobility scooters use electro magnetic regenerative brakes which work by slowing and then stopping the scooter as soon as the user releases the controls. When the brakes are applied, the batteries are recharged by the excess power from the motor. This type of brake means that a separate hand brake is not necessary, and that the scooter can be left on a slope without fear of it rolling away. Most mobility scooters have a freewheel mode so that the scooter can be moved with out it being switched on, perhaps for storage, or in case of an emergency.

The batteries on a mobility scooter are not the same as car or motorcycle batteries, and should not be substituted. Car and motorcycle batteries are starter batteries, designed to provide short bursts of power. The batteries should be charged and looked after as per the mobility scooter manual.

The number of wheels and size and type of tyre affect the stability and ride quality of the mobility scooter. Smaller scooters tend to have small solid tyres, which don’t offer the same ride quality as bigger scooters with larger pneumatic tyres. Three wheel scooters offer more legroom and a smaller turning circle compared to a four wheel scooter, but the stability can be compromised.

Mobility scooter seats often have folding armrests, and swivel to aid getting on and off the scooter. The seat is often padded to provide more comfort. Some models have a larger Captain or Admiral seat, which is more like a car seat, and may offer more adjustment than a standard seat. The larger, more comfortable seats are normally found on the larger scooters as the scooter has a larger range, so the distance travelled could be almost double that of a small scooter. Almost all seats are adjustable for height, some adjust for reach, and some even recline like a car seat.

The tiller controls the direction, and speed of the mobility scooter, and is like a bicycle handle bar. The scooter moves by either pulling or pushing the lever on the tiller (called a wigwag). Some models of scooter have a Delta tiller meaning that the user can either pull with the fingers (like a bicycle brake) to make the scooter move, or push with the thumb. This tiller is ideal for people with limited hand mobility or who have one hand much better than the other. This means they can use the same hand for both moving forward and reversing. The control panel on the tiller includes the battery gauge, the speed control, and the horn and light controls, where fitted.

The scooters speed is usually controlled by a rotary control, which ranges from low speed to high speed. On some 6 and 8mph mobility scooters there is a switch that lowers the top speed from 6/8 mph to 4mph to make it pavement legal.

You aren’t giving enough information. Are you talking about social security benefits? If so, it depends on which office you are assigned to, and what their waiting time is. As far as getting benefits, it would depend on how well your disability is documented, when they review your medical records. They can also send you to their own doctors. If you are talking about state disbility benefits, it would depend on which state you live in to help you get the answers your looking for. If you are talking about workers compensation benefts, that would also vary be state. You really need to be more specific on what kind of benefits you are asking about, what state you live in, and what your disability is before someone can really help you with an answer.

Mobility aids are used to help people walk and move around more easily, they help enable mobility. There are many different wheel chairs you can buy today for example there is the standard wheel chair, the standard lightweight chair, paediatric wheelchair, and even wheel chair accessories such as chair waterproof covers and cushions.

Mobility Scooter – is an electric scooter. They are similar in nature to the wheelchair apart from they are electric and so no manual force is required and they have the steering handles in front of the chair. Mobility scooters are great to help people get about with ease, they can be easily taken apart for quick storage either at home or in the boot of the car. Most mobility scooters have a basket on the front which is great for storage for the rider to place their belongings, whether its their handbag, or the items they buy shopping, the scooter makes popping down to the shops as easy as 1-2-3.

Walking Frames and Walking Sticks – these are used to help people to walk who don’t feel comfortable putting a lot of pressure on their body. Have a walking frame or walking stick relieves some of the weight that is put on the body while walking. If a person has a hurt leg or knee for example they can use a walking frame or walking stick to help them along.

There are many more mobility aids available today these are just a few of them, sometimes people have a few aids and use certain ones depending on the activity, for example if it is a long day shopping then a mobility scooter would probably be best or if they are walking about the house then a walking stick is used.

1.  Make Lemons Out of Lemonade – If your wheelchair is a lemon, does not conform to the terms of the written warranty, or the dealer or manufacturer is unable to repair it in the first year, you should check your states wheelchair lemon law.  You may qualify for a replacement chair.

2.  Rain or Shine – It is not necessary to stay home on a rainy day if you take precautions to protect your powerchair.   Cover the hand control with a plastic bag, but exercise caution when using a joystick with a covering on it.  Protect the drive motor by avoiding puddles that might splash or submerge the motor.  Common sense is the rule, sitting in a powerchair in the pouring rain waiting for a bus is not a good idea, however, rain should not stop you from attending to life’s daily activities such as going to work or a doctor appointment.

3.  Get in Your Comfort Zone – It would be nice if wheelchair seats were like our favorite overstuffed chair, but sadly enough they are basically not that comfortable. So, here are some tips on getting close to comfortable.   Width of the seat should be as narrow as possible without hips touching the sides.  A chair too wide causes bad posture, and affects chair performance.  Proper seat depth is tricky.  Too deep and you slouch, too shallow and you don’t have enough support and less stability.  A sling backrest with adjustable tension will allow you to sit further back in the seat, while a fixed backrest allows you to sit further forward.  Seat angle, commonly called “squeeze” is when the seat  seat has a permanent slope.  Seat angle helps keep your weight in place, and prevents you from sliding forward.  It is important to get the right amount of angle because too much can cause problems with discs in the back, curvature of the spine and pressure sores.  Most manual and powerchairs have a built in adjustment which will allow you to customize the seat angle. Seat cushions provide comfort, positioning, and prevent pressure sores.  The type of cushion you chose will depend on your criteria.  Someone who spends all day in a chair will obviously have a different need from someone who may just use a wheelchair to go shopping.

4.  All Work and No Play – For housework and cleaning, my advice would be to get your friends and family to do it, but that just is not realistic.  Learning to live with a little clutter and coming to grips with the fact that your house may never be as clean as it once was might help with some of the frustration.  Make sure that you have accessible outlets!!!  Try plugging the vacuum cleaner in when the outlet is behind the couch and you will see why this is so important.  Better yet, get a cordless vacuum!  If you need to mop, always start in the corner first!!   Cleaning the shower is easy with the new sprays that are on the market.  Pick up clutter all through the week, it lessens what you have to do during the actual cleaning.  Keep a reacher handy to get those socks that are hiding under the bed or items that may have fallen behind furniture.

5.  No Need for a Spare Tire – “Flat Free” tires no longer means made of solid rubber!  Technology has evolved to include a range from foam filling, to a poly urethane tread to a rubber insert.  So, the question is:  Which material meets your needs? Poly Urethane tires are used most commonly on manual wheelchairs.  They are highly resilient and fairly light.  The life span is 3 to 4 times of the traditional rubber tire.  Semi-pneumatic tires and inserts feature molded-in air pockets, much like the air pockets in the soles of athletic shoes, providing a slightly cushioned ride.  Found in forms ranging from poly urethane tires to inserts, semi-pneumatic tires never need air maintenance, nor will they become flat when punctured, making them truly flat-free. On today’s powerchairs, foam-filled tires, especially on the drive wheels, are the most popular flat-free solution.  The foam may vary in density depending on the required weight capacity.  Co-molded tires are most commonly found via powerchair casters and low-end manual wheelchair wheels.  Co-molded tires are especially useful as anti-tip wheels, where durability is more important than ride characteristics. Co-molded tires have an exceptional lifespan, but the entire wheel assembly requires replacement when worn.  

6.  Ball in Your Court – Being in a wheelchair should not stop you from getting out there and participating in sports.  Wheelchair users are now competing on a professional level.  There are numerous wheelchair sports associations. Wheelchair basketball was started over 40 years ago by the Veterans Administration as a rehab program.  It has grown by leaps and bounds and is now a sport.  There are over 180 teams across the U.S.  Quad Rugby is another wheelchair sport designed for quadriplegics who are unable to play basketball.  It is a mixture of basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and handball.  Power soccer is yet another great sport for those in an electric wheelchair.  There are many wheelchair sports accessories available including belts, harnesses, drink holders and special back supports.

7.  On the Road Again – For travel, first and foremost make sure that your chair is in good working order.  Take it in for a service check.  Be sure that your name and address are clearly printed on all removable parts.  Use sticky labels, and cover them with a piece of clear tape.  If you will be flying, be sure to notify the airline that you are traveling with a wheelchair. Airlines are required by law to stow your chair in the cabin, but don’t count on it if there are multiple travelers with wheelchairs.  An alternative is to gate check your chair, this will allow you to wheel onto the jetway where they will tag your chair and stow it in the belly of the plane.  Remove leg supports and seat cushion and carry them on board with you.  If you are unable to walk onto the plane, be sure to request an aisle chair.  Always check your wheelchair for  damage on arrival.   Be sure to do your homework ahead of time.  Check on hotels for handicapped accessible rooms, if you are going to be sightseeing, make sure that there are no barriers, arrive early at bus and train stations.  Wheelchair travel can be both challenging and and rewarding, and with a little planning, it will certainly be a adventure that you won’t forget.

8.  Stumbling Block – Nobody ever said it was going to be easy being disabled. Learning to cope with the mountain of little obstacles that are so frustrating is a major step in the right direction.  If you have diminished hand strength and function, use a wall mounted dispenser with refillable chambers and push button dispensing for the shower. This will eliminate the need for opening and closing bottles with wet hands.  If grasping a utensil is difficult slide a piece of 12mm hose over the handle. Outsource your toenails and get a simple trim at the nail salon on a regular basis.  Use a reacher to get at those socks from under the bed or behind the couch.  Don’t chase your food all over the plate, use a bowl instead.  Be sure to carry straws with you if you are unable to pick up a cup or glass. A 3 ft dowel with a rubber cap on both ends works great for turning light switches on and off, ringing doorbells, pushing buttons on tv or as a pushing or pulling tool. Put a thin cord through the hole on your zippers, tie to make a loop.  Be sure to join a disabled support group, as they are an amazing wealth of information.

9.  Play it Safe – Make sure that your wheelchair is in good condition at all times.  The top priority when considering safety are the brakes.  Be sure to check them regularly, loose brakes can compromise the wheelchair users safety.  Another thing to consider is stability and balance. Some guidelines to follow are:   Never lean forward any further than the length of the armrests.  If you do lean forward, be sure the front casters are facing forward.  Do not try to pick things up from the floor by reaching down in between your knees.  Do not shift your weight in the direction you are reaching as the wheelchair may tip over.  For ultimate safety, it is important that you be fully contained within the wheelchair.  A weakened arm or leg that occasionally drops to the side cannot be considered the ultimate in safety. Arm supports, as well as foot and leg huggers, help you keep it all together.

10. Live and Learn – Become a self advocate.   Being a self advocate very simply means that  you understand your own disability….you know your weaknesses and strengths, and you are able to convey this to others.  So, how do you get started?   Write it all down; your weaknesses, strengths, identify your disability, and what you need to do to participate in the things you enjoy, or need.  Find out your rights, The American Disabilities Act will spell them out for you.  Now comes the hard part for some…….Assert yourself, ask for what you need. What do you have to lose?  And finally, follow up, and make the change happen.

Living with a disability and being in a wheelchair means that you have had to make changes and adjustments to your lifestyle, but you can still stay active and enjoy your life.  With the above wheelchair tips, and a positive attitude, you can learn to thrive with your disability instead of letting it manage you!

The problem here is that chairs, whether power or manual, should be chosen to fit the user, not the door. If the user is extremely slim, then you should have no difficulty in finding a power chair to fit.

If the user is permanently in a chair, it should be chosen in conjunction with either a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, not just because it feels comfortable or fits through a particular door.
